Perhaps the word band isn’t a good description of who and what they are. They are a couple, they are individuals, they are a loose collection of talented musicians, they are true singer songwriters.

About Over the Rhine

The heart of Over the Rhine is made up of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, both married to each other. They approach their artistry from a place where the tangible and intangible just barely touch. When Detweiler was asked about how they approach their music, he said:

When we stop believing we’re doing our best work, we’re done. Every song has to be good, every record has to be great, every concert has to have some spiritual significance—something that we can’t quantify, something bigger than all of us.

They are consummate writers, able to apply prose to emotions and experiences that typically can’t be expressed through words. Yet, they do so through both words and music, making it sound effortless, like champion athletes.

Their playfulness with lyrics, and their willingness to experiment musically, can be heard throughout their immense discography. Jazzy, sultry, classical, poppy, and many more styles are hinted at throughout their library of recordings.

For me, Drunkard’s Prayer is my all time favorite. The melodies and lyrics are full of hope and meaningful observations of that something bigger than all of us. The song Spark has particular significance to me, as it delves into the power we give to fear, and how we must overcome it to truly live.

Obsessions with self-preservation
Faded when I threw my fear away
It’s not a thing you can imagine

You either lose your fear
Or spend your life with one foot in the grave
